A Major Audio Problem with Kino’s Blu-ray of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rich and Strange

In terms of picture quality, Rich and Strange has never looked better on home-video than it does on the Kino Lorber Blu-ray release. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the audio on this edition.

An error which appears on numerous previous DVD releases has sadly found its way onto this Blu-ray release. A little more than 19 minutes into film (00:19:41:13 through 00:20:40:13), which begins with the intertitle stating “Mediterranean” and ends with Joan Barry’s character asking “May I draw on this?” you will hear the sound from an earlier section of the film, when Joan Barry and Henry Kendall (Emily and Fred) are at the railway station and then on board the ship crossing the English channel (00:07:53:00 – 00:08:53:00). Now overlapping the sound and music that accompanies a montage on board a ship at sea, you hear audio of a train pulling out of a station and dialogue of train commuters, etc. This is an error that should have been corrected as it’s been known about for years.

Another issue with the sound that use this same audio track, is that it is not the audio as the film was originally released in 1931. At some point, additional foley effects and incidental music were added (shades of the 1996 Vertigo soundtrack debacle, which thankfully Universal has corrected in the Blu-ray releases). For instance, at 26 minutes in, during a scene where Emily and Gordon are walking along the deck at night, new foley effects of their footsteps are overly loud and new music has been added.  Another added sound effect at 53 minutes in, which runs for about ten minutes, is the hum of a motor which interferes with much of dialogue in a scene that takes place in a hotel room. The motor sound appears to be motivated by a ceiling fan which can be seen in the master shots. Again, this motor sound is not on the original audio.

The distributor has been made aware of these issues and their response within the forums of Blu-ray.com is that they are “too minor” for them to issue a replacement, especially as their quality control checkers didn’t catch them.

Hopefully, another label will license the title at some point and correct the errors.
